Established in 1936, Gertrude Hawk Chocolates is a family run chocolate company based in Dunmore, Pennsylvania, US. The company produces different types of gourmet chocolates including dark chocolate, chocolate Smidgens, caramel dipped apples, chocolate covered cherries, chocolate covered pretzels, fresh fudge, sugar-free candy and truffles.
During the production of chocolates at its plant, Gertrude Hawk Chocolates uses filtration on all chocolate coatings related ingredients to achieve the desired taste and texture. Initially, the company was using a wire filter basket for chocolate coatings filtration. The process proved to be very difficult due to the production downtime caused because of the regular cleaning needed of the filter baskets. A blocked filter seizes the chocolate pump, resulting in three more hours of production downtime. Therefore, it was very imperative to find an alternative filtration solution to increase production capacity with less downtime.
In order to increase its productivity without compromising on product quality, Gertrude Hawk Chocolates approached Russell Finex for a suitable filtration solution. Following a consultation, it was decided that the installation of a self-cleaning in-line strainer would meet the requirements and provide significant benefits. The Self-Cleaning Russell Eco Filter® is easy to disassemble and clean without tools, which allows higher production rates as there are no stoppages to clean filtration baskets and change filter bags. There are 4 units of industrial filters installed at the Gertrude Hawk Chocolates plant which are customized with a Q-Tap valve allowing the sampling of freshly filtered material. This effective filtration solutions enables continuous monitoring and filter operation without operator involvement and production downtime.
With the upgraded chocolate coatings filtration system, Gertrude Hawk Chocolates has improved its product quality and throughput rates.
