Industrial filtration of liquid paint
Russell Finex’s automatic self-cleaning filtration system helps Farrow & Ball to optimize its liquid paint production capacity and product quality
Established in 1946, Farrow & Ball is a manufacturer of traditional paints and wallpaper based in Dorset, UK. Farrow & Ball is a leading producer of high-quality pigmented paint and handcrafted wallpaper using only the finest quality ingredients and an eco-friendly water base. With more than 60 showrooms worldwide, the company has over 300 staff on-site and over 600 employees globally, selling through worldwide stockist networks such as B&Q, Homebase and many reputable D.I.Y stores.
At Farrow & Ball, premium paint production is one of the key applications. It is a precise and meticulous process involving many steps that work together to create a high-quality paint. It is imperative to guarantee the quality of the paint during the testing process. In comparison to other premium paint manufacturers, the company adds up to 30% more pigment, which can result in a higher level of undispersed pigments forming in the mixture. To eliminate this risk, a longer mixing time was required to ensure pigments were fully dispersed, which could take up to two days per individual batch.
In order to optimize production capacity, Farrow & Ball sought to upgrade its plant. The company approached Russell Finex to find a solution that could easily fit into its existing operation, ensuring the quality of the product whilst coping with increased demand.
Following a consultation with the experienced Russell Finex sales team and a successful on-site product trial, it was decided that the installation of a self-cleaning in-line filter would meet the requirements and provide significant benefits for the liquid paint filtration. Farrow & Ball installed two Self-Cleaning Russell Eco Filter® units at its Quality Control Department.
With the installation of these effective liquid paint filtration solutions, Farrow & Ball improved its quality-assurance process by reducing the time taken for each batch to be signed off for packaging to 45 minutes. This is 100% faster than the previous process.
These industrial filters were the ideal solution for the application and customized to meet Farrow & Ball’s exact requirements. With its unique SpiroKlene™ wiper system, these self-cleaning filters continuously clean the surface of the filter element, eliminating the risk of blockages. The filters are easy to strip down, clean and re-assemble in between colour batch changes, meaning minimal disruption.
