Filtering fuel oil for reuse
Russell Finex filtration solution helps Global Recuperation to recycle used motor oil for reuse
Motor oil is used for lubricating various internal combustion engines. Due to oxidation from rubbing between two surfaces in the engines, many impurities such as dirt, metals, varnish, water and chemicals contaminate the oil, causing the oil to be ineffective for further application. It is believed that a large amount of used motor oil is poured directly into the ground resulting in environmental and water pollution.
Recycling and reusing used motor oil is a preferable alternative to disposal and can also provide great environmental benefits. The recycled used motor oil can be re-refined into new oil, processed into fuel oils, and used as raw materials for the petroleum industry.
A waste management company, Global Recuperation based in Quebec, Canada, specializes in recycling and reclaiming waste motor oil. Initially, processing companies like these were using static filter cartridges at 20-mesh (900 micron) to process used oil which proved very difficult as the waste oil contained a variable percentage of solids which rapidly clogged the static filters. Additionally, every 10 to 60 minutes an operator had to clean the filters manually and restart production.

In order to produce a cleaner, higher-grade fuel oil from waste oil and to streamline production, Global Recuperation approached Russell Finex to discuss its filtration requirement. Following a consultation, it was decided that the installation of the Self-Cleaning Russell Eco Filter® would meet the requirements and provide significant benefits. This high-performance self-cleaning strainer screens at 150-microns and removes the contamination from waste oil, resulting in a cleaner fuel oil with less residue. Because of this effective filtration, only fewer particles remains in the oil and needs to be screened only once before use.
